Swimming Ax Head
2 Kings 6:1-7
Any mineral with a density greater than one gram per cubic centimeter doesn’t float. The density of cast iron is approximately 7.2 grams per cubic centimeter.
You’re probably thinking, “What in the world is this dude talking about!” Let me translate what I just said; iron ax heads don’t swim. But in the text that is exactly what happens, the ax head swims. Check this out:
The axe was borrowed; it didn’t belong to the prophet. He was a struggling seminary student trying to make ends meet. Sounds familiar huh J He didn’t lose the entire ax just the ax head.
The axe head was the most effective part of the axe. The cutting edge of the axe head is where the full force of power is concentrated when used to cut down a tree. Have you lost your cutting edge for the Lord? Bible study, praying, attending church.
When did the young prophet lose the axe head? I’ll tell you when. When everything seemed to be going right. At a time of growth and expansion of the school. That’s usually when the Devil strikes. When everything is going well in our lives those are the times we’re put to a test.
The young Prophet in our story didn’t lose the axe handle and he didn’t lose his knowledge of how to cut down a tree. Only one small part was lost but it stopped him in his service for the Lord.
How did the young prophet recover the ax head? He had to first confess his loss. He said, “Alas, master! For it was borrowed.” Acknowledgment is the first step to recovery. Jeremiah said it like this, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and might things, which thou knowest not.” Elisha tells him to go back to the place where he lost it. That’s what we have to do.
Here it is… What’s sunk in your life? Is it your courage, confidence, self-worth, hope, joy. The enemy would love for you to conclude that’s it. Its all over, you might as well give up, throw in the towel. You’ll never get that axe head back & you’re unable to pay the cost of it either. He’ll tell you, told you so! Guilt & shame rush in, depression & despair too. But I hear the Word of God say, “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Where fell it?
I believe the Bible communicates through this passage of scripture that the Lord cares about the little things in life. Things that might be as insignificant as an ax head. He cares about everything! Do you have any sunken ax heads? Go tell the Lord. He can make ax heads swim!
